AI companion chatbot Reddit sentiment: what 38 top posts actually show
What this is — and isn't
This is a hand-curated snapshot of 40 Reddit posts (38 in-scope after excluding 2 off-topic ones) across 7 named AI-companion-chatbot subreddits, ranked by Reddit score, from 2026-05-15 to 2026-07-29. It is nota scientific survey, not a random sample, and not proof of what "most users" think — it's a top-engagement pull. Every number on this page is computed live from the underlying dataset, not hand-typed or asserted by an AI model. Treat the findings below as descriptive of these 38 specific posts, not the wider AI-companion-chat audience.
Key findings
- Trust and leadership complaints are the largest category in this snapshot. 16 of 38 in-scope posts (42%) fall in this category, carrying 9,041 combined score — more than moderation complaints (6 posts, 3,390 score) and reliability complaints (4 posts, 1,748 score) combined.
- That signal is concentrated in one subreddit, not spread evenly. r/Chai_Unofficial alone supplied 16 of the 38 posts and 8,418 of the total score — more than the next two subreddits by score combined. The trust/leadership skew above may be more of a Chai_Unofficial pattern than a category-wide one; the small N makes that worth naming, not disproving.
- r/JanitorAI_Official posted less often but scored higher per post. Only 3 posts, but the highest average score of any subreddit in the set (1,227 per post). A sample this small (n=3) isn't enough to generalize from on its own.
- Score and comment volume don't move together. The single r/JrTrip post ("Best Uncensored NSFW AI Chatbots?") drew 1,724 comments on a comparatively modest 1,006 score. r/SillyTavernAI posts averaged 263 comments each against a 495 average score — the highest comment-to-score ratio of any multi-post subreddit here, concentrated in preset/tooling content (4 of its 7 posts).
- Negative-sentiment categories outweigh anecdotal ones by score, not just by count. Trust/leadership, moderation, and reliability complaints together account for 26 of 38 posts (68%) and 14,179 combined score — about 6x the 2,274score carried by lighter "product anecdote" posts (3 posts).
- 2 posts were excluded as off-topic. r/okbuddyvicodin and r/cscareeradviceposts appeared in the source pull but don't discuss AI-companion-chatbot sentiment at all, so they're filtered out of every number above.
- This is 11 weeks of top-engagement posts, not a poll. 2026-05-15 to 2026-07-29, 7named subreddits, ranked by score at collection time. Nothing above should be read as "X% of users feel..." — it describes these 38 posts.

Avg score and avg comments are rounded to the nearest whole number for display, so multiplying a row's average by its post count won't exactly reconstruct the totals in the stat tiles above — the tiles are computed from the raw, unrounded per-post numbers.

Methodology
40 Reddit posts were pulled from 7 named AI-companion-chatbot subreddits, ranked by Reddit score at collection time, covering 2026-05-15 to 2026-07-29. This page was compiled and published on 2026-08-05. 2posts unrelated to AI-companion sentiment were excluded from every aggregate on this page. Post bodies were not collected — category tags are an editorial judgment call from each post's title and subreddit context, not automated sentiment classification, and several are marked low-confidence where the title alone was ambiguous. This is a top-engagement snapshot, not a random or representative sample — read every number above as describing these specific posts, not the broader AI-companion-chat user base.
